Lower Saxony Police Commission New Helicopters with 600km Range

Lower Saxony's police force has significantly enhanced its aerial capabilities with the commissioning of two new Airbus H145 D3 helicopters at Hannover Airport. This investment, totaling €42.7 million, aims to bolster the police's effectiveness in complex operational scenarios and provide crucial support to fire departments, rescue services, and disaster management.

The state's Interior Minister, Daniela Behrens, highlighted the helicopters' extended range of around 600 kilometers and their capacity to be operated by two pilots while carrying up to eight additional passengers. "The new police helicopters expand our capabilities wherever time is a critical factor," Behrens stated, emphasizing their utility in searching for missing persons, conducting pursuits, and managing large-scale emergencies like floods and wildfires.

As Germany's second-largest state by area, Lower Saxony requires robust air support. These modern helicopters will gradually replace two 26-year-old MD902 models. The new aircraft are equipped with advanced features, including a rescue winch and a slide bar for deploying special forces, improving operational flexibility.

Furthermore, the helicopters are better equipped to assist in combating vegetation fires, thanks to increased transport capacity and a water tank capable of holding up to 820 liters. This upgrade signifies a major step forward in the state's emergency response infrastructure.
