Lower Saxony records its fourth-warmest June since 1881

Heat, drought and abundant sunshine defined summer 2026 in Lower Saxony, according to the German Weather Service. The state recorded 14 hot days across its territory.

Away from the North Sea coast, some stations recorded up to five very hot days for the first time. Bad Harzburg was among them. The early summer brought the most intense heat, and June became the state’s fourth-warmest since records began in 1881.

On June 27, temperatures in Lüchow reached 40.2°C, setting a new record for Lower Saxony. The heat eased after the extreme June temperatures, but the average temperature through the end of August still reached 18.7°C, or 2.5°C above the 1961-1990 reference period.

Rainfall totaled about 184 liters per square meter, just 84% of the summer average. The state received around 696 hours of sunshine, about 19% above the expected level.

Neighboring Bremen also experienced an unusually warm summer. Temperatures reached 37.3°C on June 27, while the state recorded up to 12 hot days and three very hot days above 35°C. Its average summer temperature was 18.8°C, 2.2°C above the reference period.
