LSDP Initiates Cardinal Changes

The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) has announced a significant shift in its coalition strategy. At a recent session, the party council decided to begin consultations with the Democratic Union "For Lithuania" regarding the future work of the ruling majority. Simultaneously, the LSDP confirmed its intention to maintain the existing coalition with the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union faction in the Seimas.

The LSDP's resolution states that the decision to re-evaluate the coalition with the "Nemuno aušra" (Dawn of Nemunas) party was made because the current partnership no longer meets the standards for stable governance. The council cited "Nemuno Aušra" leader Remigijus Žemaitaitis's public statements, political actions, and the tension they create as reasons why the current coalition format fails to uphold political trust, responsibility, and stable state management.

The resolution emphasizes that a ruling coalition should be built not only on a majority of votes in the Seimas but also on political trust, accountability, respect for the state, and the ability to ensure the smooth functioning of both the government and the parliament. The LSDP acknowledged its efforts to maintain state stability and allow the "aušriečiai" to operate, but noted that persistent political tension, reputational risks, and recurring disputes have increasingly hindered progress for the Lithuanian people.

A negotiation group has been appointed to conduct consultations with the Democratic Union "For Lithuania." This group, comprising Mindaugas Sinkevičius, Robertas Duchnevičius, Inga Ruginienė, Orinta Leiputė, Rasa Budbergytė, and Juras Taminskas, is tasked with reporting on the progress and results of the negotiations to the LSDP council within two weeks. The current coalition, formed last summer, consists of the Social Democrats, "Nemuno aušra," and the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union. Tensions within the coalition reportedly escalated after some ruling partners in the Seimas did not support the establishment of a military training ground in Kapčiamiestis.
