Ludwigshafen school gets new leadership amid conflicts

The education authority in Rhineland-Palatinate is stepping in to replace the leadership of the Karolina-Burger-Realschule plus in Ludwigshafen. This decision comes after prolonged efforts, including close support, numerous discussions, and supervision, failed to resolve ongoing conflicts within the school.

The school has repeatedly made headlines due to police interventions. Incidents include tear gas being deployed over three consecutive days in January, a large police operation in October, and a student allegedly attacking a teacher with a knife in May 2025. Police maintained a regular presence on school grounds following these violent incidents.

Service complaints were filed against the school's head. Adding to the turmoil, 18 out of 56 teachers reportedly called in sick at the start of the new school year. Education Minister Ute Eiling-Hütig emphasized the need for a restart, stating that the state must take responsibility for the school's development and facilitate solutions rather than merely managing conflicts.

The ministry's intervention package includes continued close support from the ADD school authority for the new team, mandatory supervision and support services, and organizational measures to foster reliable cooperation. Discussions regarding the personnel changes are ongoing. The ultimate goal is to resolve conflict situations and refocus on providing good education, effective pedagogical work, and dependable collaboration centered on the students.
