Luis Abinader and Nasry Juan Asfura Zablah issue joint declaration

The presidents of the Dominican Republic and Honduras used an official visit to set out a broad cooperation agenda, covering security, trade, investment, tourism, migration, health, agriculture, food security and sports.

Dominican President Luis Abinader received Honduran President Nasry Juan Asfura Zablah in Santo Domingo on August 29 and 30, 2026. In their joint declaration, the leaders reaffirmed the historic ties between their countries, whose diplomatic relationship dates to 1924.

The declaration placed democracy, sovereignty, constitutional order and human rights among the two governments’ shared priorities. It also highlighted regional security, international law and cooperation through the Central American Integration System, or SICA, as well as other regional integration and political dialogue mechanisms.

The presidents welcomed an agreement by their foreign ministers to hold a round of political consultations in 2027. They also backed continued work through the 2024-2026 Joint Commission for Technical and Scientific Cooperation and pledged to advance projects agreed under that framework.

Haiti featured prominently in the leaders’ regional concerns. Abinader and Asfura expressed worry about the situation there and called on the international community to step up efforts supporting the country’s stabilization. Their declaration also listed cooperation on sargassum, migration and reciprocal support for the two countries’ candidacies in international organizations and multilateral forums.
