Luís Represas, One of Portugal's Most Recognized Voices, Dies at 69

Luís Represas, a celebrated Portuguese singer and composer, has passed away at the age of 69 following a prolonged illness. Known for his distinctive voice and contributions to Portuguese popular music, Represas was a foundational member of the iconic band Trovante and penned well-known songs such as 'Feiticeira' and 'Timor'.

His death was announced by his representing agency on Wednesday, July 22, 2026. Represas was marking his 50th year in music and had recently performed with Trovante in Lisbon and Porto in March. His career spanned five decades, during which he collaborated with numerous artists and received significant honors, including being named a Commander of the Order of Merit of Portugal in 2005 and receiving the Order of Timor-Leste in 2016.

President of Portugal, António José Seguro, lamented the loss, stating that Represas leaves behind a legacy that "belongs to time, to the memory and to the heart of a people." The President, who was in Cape Verde at the time, shared a personal message recalling his friendship with the singer and their last meeting in March.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro also paid tribute, calling Represas "one of the greatest musical references" in Portugal and describing his passing as "a loss for the country and for our culture." Montenegro quoted lyrics that reflected Represas's passion for life and music, conveying his "deepest condolences" to the artist's family, friends, and admirers.

Born in Lisbon in 1956, Represas co-founded Trovante in 1976. After the band's dissolution in 1992, he embarked on a successful solo career, exploring Latin American music and collaborating with Cuban artists. His song 'Timor' became an anthem for the East Timorese independence movement.
