Lula aims for first-round win in Bahia campaign rally

Salvador – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva launched his first campaign event in Bahia on Friday, a state where the majority of voters typically support the Workers' Party (PT) candidate. The rally in the state capital had a festive atmosphere, reminiscent of an "out-of-season carnival," as Lula declared his intention to secure victory in the first round of the presidential election.

Despite Lula's optimism, opinion polls suggest a tight race. According to DataFolha, Lula holds 39% of voter intentions, while his main rival, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, trails with 33%. This narrow margin underscores the challenge of achieving a first-round win.

Lula, visibly energetic, danced to the campaign jingle of Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues, who is seeking re-election. They paraded in an open-top vehicle, surrounded by enthusiastic supporters, creating a scene akin to the famous Salvador carnival parades. The vehicle was also accompanied by candidates for the Senate, Rui Costa and Jaques Wagner. Wagner's presence comes after he stepped down from his role as PT's Senate leader amid allegations of financial impropriety.

Allies of Lula support his ambition for a first-round victory, believing that an increased vote margin in the Northeast, especially in Bahia, is crucial. Tassio Brito, president of the PT in Bahia, told Estadão that the state is key to their national victory. "Our goal is to increase the president's vote share, expanding our lead to 5 million votes. Bahians are conscious and know how to choose. We have everything in hand to achieve a historic election: well-regarded governments, a grateful people. I am sure the popular choice will be for this project to continue in Bahia and Brazil," Brito stated.
