Lula criticizes Bolsonaro's son for denying climate change

Lula accused Bolsonaro of demonstrating "irresponsible inexperience" by denying global warming and characterizing extreme weather events as mere cyclical phenomena unrelated to human activity.

In a social media post, Lula stated that denying global warming in the 21st century and reducing climate change mitigation to basic sanitation reveals the "irresponsible inexperience" of someone aspiring to lead Brazil. This criticism came after Bolsonaro, in a recent interview, sidestepped questions about being a climate change denier, instead referring to current weather events as extreme but cyclical.

Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, suggested that these climatic events are not directly linked to human influence on the environment. He proposed that investing in basic sanitation is the best approach to resolving climate-related problems. Lula countered that such a view represents a simplistic approach to complex issues, akin to denying the importance of vaccines or disregarding scientific consensus.

Lula asserted that governing Brazil requires more than adventurism and that those who fail to understand the gravity of climate-related matters are ill-equipped to lead the nation's future. He pointed to his administration's actions, including reducing deforestation in the Amazon, Cerrado, and Pantanal regions, and strengthening environmental oversight agencies. Lula emphasized that these measures were necessary to reverse the environmental neglect experienced during Jair Bolsonaro's presidency.
