Lula nominated as Brazil's ruling party candidate, eyes fourth term

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil's current president, has officially secured the nomination as the presidential candidate for the ruling Workers' Party, setting the stage for his pursuit of a fourth term in office. The party formally endorsed the 81-year-old leader at its convention in São Paulo on August 2nd, marking his seventh presidential bid.

Despite persistent questions about his age and health, Lula has strongly asserted his fitness for office. "I have the same energy as when I was thirty," he declared at the convention, aiming to dispel concerns. He further emphasized his current health status, claiming to be in better condition than when he was first elected president in 2002. Lula's campaign is expected to focus on strengthening Brazil's defense industry, protecting its rare mineral resources, and implementing social policies aimed at reducing the tax burden on low-income citizens and offering debt relief programs.

The presidential race is shaping up to be a contest between Lula and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was confirmed as the Liberal Party's candidate on July 25th. Flávio Bolsonaro, known for his far-right stance, has garnered support from international right-wing figures, including former US President Donald Trump and current leaders of Argentina and Israel. This international backing has drawn criticism from Brazil's Workers' Party, which has accused Lula's opponents of blatant foreign interference in the upcoming election.

Brazil's electoral calendar dictates that parties must finalize their candidate lists by August 5th, with official registration due by August 15th. The official campaign period is set to commence on August 16th.
