Lula's campaign files complaints against Caiado and Renan over debate remarks

The campaign of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has lodged formal complaints against presidential candidates Renan Santos and Ronaldo Caiado. The legal actions, filed with the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), target statements made by both candidates during a debate hosted by Band and Estadão on Sunday.

The scandal of the Dark Horse film, widely reported by the media, has no connection whatsoever with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Nevertheless, the respondent uses a pun to create a false association and, consequently, confuse the electorate.

One complaint focuses on Ronaldo Caiado, who attempted to link Lula to ongoing federal police investigations concerning his son, Fábio Luís Lula da Silva, and former chief of staff Marco Aurélio Santana Ribeiro, for alleged influence peddling. Caiado also drew a parallel between this case and the investigation into Senator Flávio Bolsonaro regarding the financing of the film “Dark Horse.” Lula's legal team argued that Caiado used a pun to create a false association and confuse voters.

The second complaint targets Renan Santos, who reportedly insulted President Lula, calling him a "drunk" and a "thief," among other epithets. Santos also suggested Lula had better company than his wife, First Lady Janja da Silva. The First Lady subsequently issued a statement condemning the remarks as misogynistic.

Lula's campaign asserts that these maneuvers by Caiado and Santos exceeded the boundaries of legitimate political debate, aiming to harm Lula's honor and reputation through slander, defamation, and insult. They are requesting that content produced by Caiado's and Renan's teams based on debate videos be removed from circulation and that both candidates be fined R$ 30,000.

Unequivocal, thus, is the maneuver perpetrated by the candidate and the political party to, extrapolate the limits of legitimate political debate, attack the honor and reputation of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to the extent that imputations were directed at him, imputations that were later replicated on social media, which consist of slander, defamation, and insult.

Renan Santos, in response, reiterated his statements, characterizing them as "political criticisms directed at public figures and the current government's actions, fully within the electoral debate." He added, "Whoever does not have the dignity to withstand criticism should not run for President of the Republic, or at least should have the courage to attend debates and defend their own honor." The Caiado campaign has not yet publicly commented on the actions filed by Lula's campaign.
