Macará loses to Santos in Brazil but keeps Copa Sudamericana hopes alive

Macará suffered a 2-1 defeat against Brazilian powerhouse Santos in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana round of 16 tie on Thursday. The result, however, leaves the series open for the return leg scheduled for August 20th in Ambato, Ecuador.

Playing at the iconic Vila Belmiro stadium, known as the temple of Pelé, Macará showed no fear against a Santos team boasting a rich history, including multiple Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental titles, and legendary players like Pelé and Neymar. The Ecuadorian side, managed by Uruguayan Guillermo Sanguinetti, even took an early lead.

In the fifth minute, Argentinian forward Franco Posse put Macará ahead, capitalizing on a cross from young Ecuadorian midfielder Mateo Viera. The goal surprised Santos's central defenders. However, Santos, spurred on by Neymar, managed to equalize just before halftime. Neymar's skillful pass set up Gabriel Barbosa for the 1-1 goal.

The home team secured their victory in the second half. Neymar was again instrumental, delivering a corner kick that found Willian Arão, who scored the decisive second goal against a surprised Macará goalkeeper Rodrigo Rodríguez. The return match at Ambato's Bellavista stadium will determine which team advances in the tournament.
