MACBAN chairman’s killing threatens Benue peace efforts, IPCR

The killing of Ardo Risku Mohammed, the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Benue State, represents a significant blow to ongoing peacebuilding initiatives in the region. The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) condemned the incident, describing it as a grievous attack on peace and efforts to foster harmonious coexistence.

According to a statement signed by IPCR Director-General Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, Mohammed was widely respected for his dedication to promoting dialogue, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence among the diverse communities in Benue State. His efforts to strengthen understanding and foster cordial relations between different ethnic and religious groups earned him considerable respect across the state.

The IPCR emphasized that individuals committed to peace advocacy should be protected, warning that attacks on such figures could undermine stability. The Institute acknowledged the reported arrest of approximately 10 suspects in connection with the killing as a positive step toward accountability. They urged security agencies to conduct a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation to ensure that all culpable individuals are prosecuted.

Reaffirming its commitment to peacebuilding, the IPCR appealed to community leaders and civil society organizations to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tensions. The Institute pledged continued support for dialogue and mediation initiatives aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence and social cohesion throughout Nigeria. They extended condolences to Mohammed's family, the MACBAN community, and the people of Benue State.
