Machado and González Urrutia to evaluate dialogue path between opposition and Chavismo

Venezuelan opposition leaders María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia have called a meeting of their coalition parties for Wednesday. The primary agenda is to formulate a unified public position regarding the dialogue initiative recently agreed upon by the Venezuelan Parliament and a group of opposition members who were part of the 2015 legislature.

A statement released by Machado's party, Vente Venezuela, emphasized that any agreement or decision must prioritize the urgency of the people's needs and uphold the popular mandate of Venezuelans. The meeting, which includes parties from the main opposition bloc, the Unitary Platform of Venezuela (PUD), seeks to gather information about the announced dialogue path and establish a clear public stance.

This development comes after the Venezuelan Parliament, controlled by the ruling Chavista party, announced the commencement of a work plan on August 1 to promote democracy in the country. Initial conversations between the Parliament's president, Jorge Rodríguez, and Dinorah Figuera, representing the opposition-led 2015 legislature, began on June 18. The Parliament described the plan as aimed at "strengthening democracy" and collectively addressing the consequences of recent seismic events.

The opposition group, meanwhile, characterized the initiative as a "roadmap to promote stability, democracy, and national recovery," intended to usher in "a new era that will lead to a Venezuela of progress and freedoms." This statement was shared by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on his social media account.
