Maciej Kawalski: The director with a medical degree

Maciej Kawalski says he feels “enormous joy and gratitude” as his film adaptation of “The Doll” approaches its premiere. The film, starring Kamila Urzędowska and Marcin Dorociński, will open in cinemas on September 30.

Kawalski describes the production as the culmination of almost three years of work involving several thousand people. He says the time passed extremely quickly, even though three years can feel both long and short.

Now, he says, the film they dreamed into existence is being handed to audiences. From that moment, he adds, it will no longer belong to the filmmakers alone.

The director also responds to the idea that audiences face “Doll mania” after earlier film versions by Wojciech Has and Ryszard Ber. He says he welcomes the phrase and argues that works people stop returning to and redefining eventually die, “like Latin.”
