Macron assures reconstruction for wildfire-ravaged southern France

French President Emmanuel Macron has vowed to rebuild the areas in southwestern France ravaged by recent wildfires, offering a message of solidarity and resilience. "We will rebuild, we will repair and we will be present for as long as necessary," Macron stated in an Instagram post.

Macron extended his gratitude to the nation's firefighters, military, police, and farmers for their relentless efforts in battling the extensive blazes. He described the situation as a severe test for France, highlighting the nation's unity in the face of adversity. "In these hours when the flames are putting our country to a hard test, France shows its true face. A united people standing together," he wrote.

The wildfires have scorched nearly 1,000 square kilometers, primarily affecting the Landes and Gironde departments. This has resulted in the evacuation of approximately 197,000 people, a figure the Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described as potentially the largest peacetime evacuation in the country's history. Macron also extended his thoughts to Spain, Italy, and Greece, which are similarly grappling with severe wildfires, and acknowledged the support received from European partners like Germany and Sweden, emphasizing the solidarity underpinning the European Union.
