Macron Holds Crisis Talks as Wildfires Spread Across France

French President Emmanuel Macron convened an emergency interministerial meeting Monday as devastating wildfires continued to spread across multiple regions of France. The nation, along with neighboring Spain, is grappling with extensive blazes that have destroyed hundreds of homes, necessitated large-scale evacuations, and created extreme weather conditions. In the southwestern Gironde region, which has been particularly hard-hit, fires have consumed 240 homes since Wednesday. The municipality of Le Porge alone saw approximately 170 properties damaged, according to local officials. The ongoing fires have injured 84 firefighters, with around 2,500 firefighters, 1,500 military personnel, and 1,200 police officers and gendarmes deployed to combat the flames. Concerns have been raised by the CFDT firefighters' union regarding personnel being sent into dangerous conditions without adequate protection from carcinogenic smoke and particles, calling for wider distribution of new filtering hoods. At least four firefighters have required treatment in hyperbaric chambers for carbon monoxide poisoning. Meanwhile, Spain is confronting its own severe fire crisis. National civil protection chief Virginia Barcones described a fire near Avila as a "monster," encompassing a perimeter of 280 kilometers and burning 77,000 hectares. Approximately 75,000 people have been evacuated from various regions, including Madrid, Avila, and Toledo. While authorities stated the fires were "not yet under control," plans were being made to reopen a campsite and allow some residents to return home in specific areas if conditions permitted. Winds are currently pushing fires near Madrid away from the capital, but are forcing further evacuations in nearby villages. A single civilian death has been reported near Valencia, and two firefighters died in France last week.
