Europe wildfires rage on, forcing 200,000 from homes

Wildfires continue to scorch vast areas of western France and central Spain, compelling around 200,000 residents to flee their homes. The infernos have devoured forests and residences near Bordeaux and Madrid, with firefighters describing the blazes as too immense to confront directly.

On France's Atlantic coast, 44,000 individuals were evacuated from the Cap Ferret peninsula, many by boat. Towns near the tourist hub of Bordeaux were also evacuated as a precautionary measure against the advancing flames, fueled by strong winds. French authorities reported over 140,000 evacuations in the Gironde and Landes departments.

In Spain, the Interior Ministry stated that 60,000 people have been displaced. The government has declared a national emergency as two major fires near the capital, Madrid, merge into one. The blaze in Guadalajara province alone has destroyed an estimated 32,000 hectares.

French officials believe the fires were sparked accidentally, but acknowledge that increasingly dry and hot summers are amplifying their magnitude. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez warned of a wind shift that has intensified one blaze into a "large, self-sustaining fire that is extremely difficult to bring under control." He pledged to reorganize the response to fight it from the ground and prevent its advance toward Bordeaux. French President Emmanuel Macron requested EU assistance and the mobilization of the French army. The European Commission is dispatching firefighting aircraft to both France and Spain. The fires have injured dozens of firefighters and claimed the lives of three.
