Madiun Strengthens Anti-Drug Prevention Through “Drug-Free Urban Village” Program

Madiun is taking its anti-drug campaign into the city’s urban villages, where local administrations are being asked to play a larger role in prevention. The initiative, known as Kelurahan Bersih Narkoba, or “Drug-Free Urban Village,” reflects concern that drug distribution has reached areas on the outskirts.

Acting Mayor F. Bagus Panuntun said urban-village governments have a strategic role in preventing and combating drug abuse. He made the comments during a public participation session in Manguharjo district attended by residents, students, university students and young graduates.

“City government supports this by facilitating activities that can steer residents, from students to the wider public, away from the potential use of drugs,” Bagus said. He also described drug abuse as a threat to younger generations and said schools and teachers should provide education while directing students toward positive activities.

Kelurahan Bersinar is a national strategic program designed to create villages and urban neighborhoods with stronger resilience and awareness against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. It focuses not only on enforcement, but also on prevention, education and community-based rehabilitation.

Bagus said changing forms of drugs made continued awareness important. Madiun is coordinating with police, the National Narcotics Agency, P4BN, prosecutors and other relevant bodies in an effort to strengthen prevention and create drug-free communities.
