Madrid Becomes the Showcase for World Pádel

Madrid is preparing to put the world’s leading pádel players on display as the Premier Padel circuit returns after a three-week break. The P1 tournament begins Tuesday at the Movistar Arena and runs through Sept. 6.

The Madrid event has held P1 status since 2022, placing it just below the circuit’s majors. It has become the most prominent regular-season tournament among the five held in Spain, alongside events in Valencia, Málaga, Gijón and Valladolid. Barcelona will host the season finals in December for the top eight pairs.

In the men’s draw, Spain’s Arturo Coello and Argentina’s Agustín Tapia, the world’s top-ranked pair, will pursue their ninth title of the season. Their main rivals include Alejandro Galán and Federico Chingotto, ranked second, as well as Martín Di Nenno and Leo Augsburger, who won the Madrid final last year before Augsburger teamed up with Juan Lebrón.

The women’s leaders, Spain’s Gemma Triay and Argentina’s Delfi Brea, will seek their sixth title of the year. Claudia Fernández and Martina Calvo also arrive with strong recent records, while second-ranked Bea González and Paula Josemaría and third-ranked Andrea Ustero and Ari Sánchez will challenge them.

One of the tournament’s central moments will be Alejandra Salazar’s farewell in her home city. The 40-year-old, a seven-time world champion and former world number one, will retire in Barcelona in December after 26 seasons. She holds the World Padel Tour record with 52 titles. The Madrid event offers nearly half a million euros in prize money.
