MAG to build new catering facility at KLIA

Malaysia Aviation Group is building a new catering facility near Kuala Lumpur International Airport as it prepares to expand its flight network. The facility, operated through the group’s food-services unit MAG Culinary Solutions, is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2028 and begin operations in the second quarter of 2029.

Once operational, the facility will produce up to 50,000 meals a day. That would nearly double MAGCS’s current handling capacity and allow it to serve the group’s airlines as well as third-party customers. Groundwork began in July after the unit obtained a Ground Handling Licence and a Technical Approval Certificate from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia. The project also received a Temporary Manufacturing Licence from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority.

MAG Group President and Chief Executive Officer Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar said the facility would help the group provide consistent, high-quality meals as its network grows. “This increase in MAGCS capacity strengthens MAG’s foundation, improves its competitiveness, and puts the group in the best position to capture future growth opportunities,” he said at a media briefing in Kuala Lumpur.

Since MAG brought catering operations in-house in 2023, customer satisfaction with inflight meals has risen from 72% to 78%. Catering-service punctuality has remained at 99.9%.

Malaysia Airlines will resume direct flights to Busan, South Korea, on Dec. 2, operating four times a week with Boeing 737-8 aircraft. The route last operated in 1998, and its return will make Malaysia Airlines the only carrier offering a nonstop Kuala Lumpur-Busan service. Firefly will add direct flights to Kunming in southwest China, while Malaysia Airlines will increase daily services to Brisbane and Fukuoka and raise Surabaya flights from 14 to 16 per week.
