Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake Triggers Alerts in Southern Taiwan

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake jolted southern Taiwan on the morning of July 27, with its epicenter located near Tainan. The tremor occurred at approximately 10:14 AM local time and had a very shallow focal depth of just 9.6 kilometers.

The earthquake's proximity and shallow depth caused significant shaking, prompting the Central Weather Administration (CWA) to issue national-level alerts for Chiayi County, Chiayi City, and Tainan City. Residents in these areas were advised to seek immediate shelter by "dropping, covering, and holding on" to protect themselves from strong tremors.

The intensity of the shaking varied across the island. The maximum intensity, rated at level 4, was recorded in areas including Yanshan and Zengwen in Tainan, and Dapu and Fanlu in Chiayi County. Other regions, such as Tainan's Shanhua and Baihe, and parts of Kaohsiung, experienced level 3 shaking. Many other areas across Taiwan, from Miaoli southward, as well as Penghu and Taitung, felt the earthquake with lower intensity levels.

The event underscores Taiwan's vulnerability to seismic activity due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire. While this particular earthquake was of moderate magnitude, the shallow depth and widespread perception highlight the importance of ongoing earthquake preparedness and early warning systems in the region.
