Magnitude 5.0 Earthquake in Malatya; No Damage Reported So Far, Geologist Comments

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the Battalgazi district of Malatya, Turkey, at 06:20 AM local time. The earthquake's epicenter was recorded at a depth of 15.59 kilometers, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The tremor was felt in the surrounding provinces of Malatya, Elazığ, Adıyaman, Tunceli, and Şanlıurfa. Malatya Governor Seddar Yavuz reported via social media that teams had begun field assessments and that no adverse effects or damage had been reported at that time. He extended well wishes to those affected by the earthquake.

AFAD also issued a statement confirming that, as of the latest update, there were no negative situations arising from the earthquake. The agency stated that field scanning efforts were ongoing and conveyed its condolences to the affected citizens.

Geologist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür commented on the event, noting that the earthquake occurred in the Gülümuşağı area of Malatya at a depth of approximately 15 kilometers. He identified the location as being on the East Anatolian Fault (DAF), describing it as a segment that has not yet ruptured but has been previously affected by seismic activity. Görür wished those affected well.
