Magnitude 5.1 tremor shakes Colombia two weeks after major earthquake

Colombia experienced another seismic event on Wednesday as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook its eastern and central regions. The tremor occurred at 11:45 local time, with the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) pinpointing the epicenter in the municipality of Los Santos, Santander department, at a depth of 149 kilometers.

This latest earthquake has understandably caused alarm, occurring precisely two weeks after a much larger magnitude 7.4 earthquake devastated parts of western Colombia and the Coffee-Growing Region on August 10. That earlier quake resulted in a tragic toll of at least 331 deaths, 4,439 injuries, and 240 disappearances, alongside significant structural damage.

Fortunately, preliminary reports from the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) and local emergency services indicate no fatalities, injuries, or considerable damage to public or private infrastructure from the magnitude 5.1 tremor. The presidency confirmed that coordinated monitoring is underway with departmental risk management committees to assess any potential issues.

The Mesa de los Santos area, where Wednesday's epicenter was located, is known as Colombia's primary seismic hub and the second most seismically active region globally, experiencing frequent low-intensity tremors. The SGC had already recorded two smaller magnitude 3.1 earthquakes in the same sector earlier on Wednesday morning.
