Magnitude 5.5 earthquake shakes Chupaca in Peru's Junín region

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolted the Chupaca province in Peru's Junín region on Thursday at 1:57 p.m., according to the Peruvian Geophysical Institute (IGP).

The tremor, which occurred nearly a month after a devastating earthquake impacted the same region, caused alarm among the population of Chupaca. The IGP reported that the earthquake registered at 5.5 magnitude, with its epicenter located 19 kilometers southwest of Chupaca at a depth of 9 kilometers. The intensity was measured at V on the Mercalli scale.

As of now, the IGP has not reported any material damage or affected individuals. Regional authorities from Indeci are urging the public to remain calm and to identify safe zones both inside and outside their homes. They also emphasize the importance of having an emergency backpack ready, equipped with essentials like masks, tools, alcohol, non-perishable food, and a portable radio, in anticipation of potential aftershocks.
