Magnitude 7.4 earthquake shakes Colombia's Choco province, severe damage and injuries reported

A significant 7.4 magnitude earthquake rocked Colombia's coastal Choco province on Monday morning, originating near San José del Palmar at a depth of 79 kilometers, according to the Colombian Geological Service. The initial tremor, which struck at 7:34 a.m. local time, was followed shortly by a magnitude 4.6 seismic event in the same area.

While the Colombian National Unit for Disaster Risk Management confirmed there is no tsunami threat, the impact on the ground has been substantial. Nubia Carolina Córdoba-Curi, the Governor of Choco province, reported that numerous injuries have occurred and that buildings sustained severe damage. Damage assessments are currently underway to determine the full extent of the destruction.
