Main opposition party slams ruling party for inviting ex-President Park to policy meeting

Han Byung-do, the floor leader of South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party, has sharply criticized the ruling People Power Party for inviting former President Park Geun-hye to its policy meeting. Han labeled the move a "truly bizarre regression into the past" and a "reckless act that directly insults the candlelight revolution and the constitutional order."

Speaking at a party policy coordination meeting, Han questioned how the People Power Party could aim for the future by using Park, who was unanimously impeached by the Constitutional Court and sentenced to 22 years in prison, as a "compass." He argued that inviting a former president who faced judicial judgment for undermining constitutional order is incompatible with the ruling party's own slogan, "Building Tomorrow by Standing on Today."

Han further characterized the People Power Party as a party solely focused on rallying the "extreme right." He urged them to cease their "dangerous reverse course" and instead move forward constructively for the lives of the people and the future of South Korea.

The People Power Party began its one-night, two-day retreat in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, to prepare for the regular parliamentary session. Former President Park Geun-hye was scheduled to deliver a lecture to the party's lawmakers during this event.
