Mainz thrash Hamburg 5-0 as Augsburg go top with Frankfurt win

Mainz turned a damaging defeat from last season into a resounding 5-0 victory over Hamburg, while Augsburg climbed to the top of the Bundesliga with a 4-1 comeback win at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Mainz had lost 4-0 at Hamburg last season, but controlled Sunday’s match from the opening stages. Sheraldo Becker put them ahead in the 19th minute after Kaishu Sano played him through, and Becker then supplied the cross for Phillipp Mwene to make it 2-0 before halftime.

Becker remained central after the break, setting up Phillip Tietz for Mainz’s third goal. Tietz added another by beating goalkeeper Heuer Fernandes, before former Hamburg player Ransford-Yeboah Koenigsdoerffer completed the rout. Hamburg have lost both of their opening matches and have yet to score, leaving them bottom of the table. Mainz sit fifth with four points.

“It was a very good performance,” Mainz coach Urs Fischer said. “We were in control over the 90 minutes. We really didn't allow much (chances for Hamburg). We are happy to take the three points with us.”

Augsburg’s victory in Frankfurt followed a very different script. Jonathan Burkardt headed the hosts in front inside six minutes, and Frankfurt dominated the first half. Augsburg changed the match immediately after the break, with debutant Arijon Ibrahimovic heading in at the back post. Robin Fellhauer put the visitors ahead within a minute, Alexis Claude-Maurice added a third from the edge of the box, and Fabian Rieder completed the win with a late free-kick.
