Maiquetía Airport continues simulations amid uncertainty over reopening

Maiquetía International Airport is currently in a phase of operational simulations across three provisional terminals, two months after the earthquakes on June 24. Commercial flights are still suspended as the main terminal building undergoes repairs. The temporary tent-like structures, set up in the exterior parking lot, offer a glimmer of hope for passengers awaiting flight information.

Despite expectations from aviation sources and media outlets, commercial operations did not resume on August 24 as anticipated. Official information remains scarce, with the airport continuing simulations without a formal reopening date. Meanwhile, crews from the 'Venezuela Renace' program are working on the airport's surroundings, including repaving the road leading to the terminal and landscaping.

The tents were relocated to the parking area of the residences and a covering of waterproof tarpaulins currently covers the perimeter, reducing visibility from the public road.

Repairs extend beyond the airport itself. The access road from El Trébol roundabout has been newly asphalted. Workers are actively conditioning green areas with grass and ornamental plants. Heavy machinery is frequently present, and the perimeter is secured by National Guards. Despite these efforts, uncertainty persists for families residing in nearby housing projects affected by the tremors, whose tents have been relocated.

The provisional terminals, erected in the former international terminal parking area, are branded with 'Venezuela Renace.' These structures aim to replicate the airport's usual logistics, featuring ramps, wheelchair availability, and industrial air conditioning. However, officials from the International Airport Institute of Maiquetía (IAIM) have provided limited details regarding the procedures for the eventual reopening.
