Major Crash Blocks Accra-Kumasi Highway; Traffic Diverted

Traffic on the vital Accra-Kumasi Highway ground to a halt Sunday following a severe multi-vehicle collision at Birimso Bridge in Ghana's Eastern Region. The accident, which completely blocked the N6 Highway, involved a fuel tanker engulfed in flames, a high-occupancy passenger bus, and a loaded articulated truck.

Emergency personnel and police from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) swiftly responded to the scene. To manage the extensive disruption, officers implemented temporary diversions for motorists. Vehicles heading towards Accra were rerouted via Kibi at Nsutam, while those bound for Kumasi were diverted at Apedwa.

In a public notice, police urged drivers to cooperate with officers managing the alternative routes and to exercise caution due to potential delays. The Ghana National Fire Service confirmed that two fuel tankers, an STC bus, a pickup truck, and a Kia Sorento were involved in the crash. Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing, and authorities have yet to confirm the number of casualties, injuries, or survivors.

The police stated that further updates would be provided as efforts to clear the vehicles and restore normal traffic flow continue. The incident highlights the inherent risks on busy highway corridors and the critical role of rapid emergency response in mitigating the impact of such accidents.
