Major fire erupts at regional landfill near Leskovac

A significant fire erupted overnight at the Željkova regional landfill, located near the city of Leskovac in Serbia. A substantial contingent of firefighters remains actively engaged at the site, working to contain and extinguish the flames.

The efforts to combat the blaze involve not only professional firefighters but also employees from the company managing the landfill. Additionally, workers and machinery from Leskovac's public utility enterprises have been mobilized to assist in the operation.

The fire is generating considerable smoke, which is spreading and affecting the air quality in the vicinity. The plumes are currently drifting towards the villages of Guberevac and Bunibrod, raising concerns among local residents.

While the situation with fires across Serbia is reported as stable, authorities are monitoring weather conditions. An exceptionally strong wind is forecast for the weekend, which could potentially reignite embers or spread existing fires, particularly in areas like Deliblatska Peščara.
