Major Fire Erupts in Pelješac, Mobilizing County Firefighters Amid Strong Winds

An extensive fire has erupted in the Pelješac region, prompting a large-scale response from firefighting units across the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The situation is described as serious, with strong winds fanning the flames and accelerating the spread.

County Fire Commander Stjepan Simović confirmed the deployment of numerous firefighters from Korčula, Pelješac, the State Intervention Unit, and Dubrovnik. "The situation is not good at all; a strong bura wind is blowing and spreading it," Simović stated briefly, highlighting the challenging conditions.

This incident follows another fire that firefighters extinguished overnight in Lovište, also on Pelješac. Simultaneously, efforts were underway to combat a fire on the island of Šipan, aided by a Canadair aircraft. The report from Dubrovački dnevnik indicates ongoing firefighting operations.

Meanwhile, significant firefighting resources are also engaged in the neighboring Split-Dalmatia County, specifically in Lokva Rogoznica, where a fire has been burning since the previous night. Over 110 firefighters with 33 vehicles, including eight from Dubrovnik-Neretva County, are involved in combating that blaze. The strong winds are complicating efforts at all fire sites as crews continue their interventions.
