Major Telstra Outage Disrupts Services Across Australia, Halts Regional Trains

A widespread outage at Telstra, Australia's largest telecommunications provider, crippled mobile and internet services for thousands nationwide on Wednesday. The disruption also impacted critical regional train services and emergency communications across the country.

Telstra confirmed it was investigating an issue affecting mobile calls and data connections on its network, which serves approximately 25 million mobile services. The company advised customers to restart their devices as a potential temporary fix while engineers worked to restore services. Reports of the outage surged on monitoring platforms shortly after 4 a.m. local time, with tens of thousands of complaints logged as the disruption spread.

The failure had significant knock-on effects. In Victoria, all regional train services were suspended because communication systems dependent on the Telstra network failed. V/Line, the state's regional rail operator, stated that services could not run due to radio network issues linked to the outage, with no estimated time for resumption. Transport for NSW also reported suspended trains on several lines, with replacement buses being arranged.

Federal Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain assured that Telstra was working on restoration and noted that Australian mobile phones are designed to switch to other networks for emergency Triple Zero calls. However, Western Australia Police warned that some emergency calls were affected, urging residents to check on vulnerable family members. The cause of the outage remained unidentified as of Wednesday morning, adding to public frustration amid a string of major telecommunications disruptions in Australia over recent years.
