Makhachev edges Garry to retain UFC welterweight title

Islam Makhachev retained his UFC welterweight title with a unanimous decision victory over challenger Ian Machado Garry in a tense five-round bout at UFC 330. The Russian champion employed his signature dominant grappling to neutralize Garry's offense and secure the win.

Makhachev, facing a significant height and reach disadvantage, initiated his grappling strategy early, executing a swift single-leg takedown in the first round. While Garry managed to return to his feet without sustaining damage, Makhachev's relentless wrestling proved effective throughout the fight.

Despite a moment in the second round where Makhachev landed a stunning high kick, Garry survived the onslaught and continued to pose threats. In the third round, Garry found his striking range, landing effective blows to Makhachev's body and legs. However, the champion reverted to his smothering grappling in the fourth round to regain control.

Garry, understanding he likely needed a finish, pushed hard in the final round. Yet, Makhachev managed to avoid significant trouble and secure the victory on all three judges' scorecards. "Ian is a great fighter, a good man, and I just respect him. He gave me a hard time, but I still prove (myself) every fight. Thank you for this match," Makhachev stated after the fight.

In the undercard, Mackenzie Dern also defended her women's strawweight title with a decision win over Gillian Robertson.
