Malawi book historic WAFCON quarters despite Zambia defeat

Malawi's women's national football team, known as the Scorchers, has achieved a historic qualification for the quarterfinals of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026. This milestone was secured despite a narrow 2-1 defeat against Zambia in their final Group C match. Malawi advanced on goal difference, remarkably topping a group that included defending champions Nigeria, who secured their own quarterfinal spot with a decisive 6-2 victory over Egypt.

Zambia started strongly, with their top scorer Barbra Banda netting an early goal from distance, her fifth of the tournament. Margaret Belemu then set up Prisca Chilufya for Zambia's second goal just before halftime, giving them a commanding lead. However, Malawi fought back after the break, driven by the necessity of scoring to ensure qualification. Tabitha Chawinga ignited their hopes in the 72nd minute, skillfully evading two defenders before slotting the ball past the goalkeeper to halve the deficit. Zambia came close to extending their lead late in the game when Kabange Mupopo's shot hit the woodwork, but the final whistle confirmed Malawi's progression.

While Malawi celebrates this significant achievement, Zambia's campaign concludes despite their victory. Nigeria, the reigning champions, also advanced smoothly, defeating Egypt convincingly.
