Malawi to meet Cameroon in Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final

Malawi continued their surprising run at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations, defeating Algeria 3-1 on Wednesday to secure a spot in the final against Cameroon. This marks Malawi's debut appearance in the tournament finals.

Cameroon secured their place by defeating hosts Morocco 3-1 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw after extra time. The match was not without controversy, as Morocco was awarded a penalty two minutes before the end of extra time after a VAR review, but the attempt was saved.

Malawi's journey to the final has been remarkable, including earlier victories over defending champions Nigeria and favored rivals Ghana in the quarter-finals. The Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa, scored Malawi's goals against Algeria, with Ikram Adjabi scoring the consolation for Algeria.

The final, scheduled for Sunday in Rabat, will crown a new African champion, as all previous tournaments have been won by Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, or South Africa. The Cup of Nations finals also serve as qualifiers for next year's Women's World Cup, with the four quarter-final winners earning a spot.
