Malaysia Airlines pilot arrested in Indonesia for drug smuggling

Indonesian police have arrested a Malaysia Airlines pilot at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on charges of drug trafficking and use. The 39-year-old pilot, identified only as 'A', was apprehended on July 28 after customs officials detected suspicious items in his luggage during an X-ray scan.

Authorities allege that 'A' attempted to smuggle 70,000 ecstasy pills and 4 grams of methamphetamine from Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta. A subsequent urine test revealed the presence of methamphetamine, ecstasy, and cocaine. Indonesian police suspect 'A' was acting as a drug mule and may have been operating under the influence of narcotics during the flight.

During police questioning, 'A' reportedly confessed to being instructed to transport the drugs to Jakarta in exchange for 50,000 Malaysian ringgit (approximately $17,000 USD). He stated that he was to receive further instructions upon arrival in Jakarta and that the drugs were to be collected by another individual at a hotel. He also admitted to having transported drugs to Malaysia's Borneo island and Jakarta on two previous occasions.

Malaysia Airlines has launched an internal investigation into the incident. Indonesian authorities expressed concern that drug trafficking organizations are exploiting the separate baggage regulations for airline crew members. This case follows a similar incident in June where Australian police arrested a Thai Airways flight attendant for attempting to smuggle heroin into Australia.
