Malaysia: Angler wins RM7,000 with 1.085kg fish at surfcasting challenge

A retired soldier has landed a significant prize at the Selangor Surfcasting Challenge 2026, held at Tanjung Harapan in Port Klang, Malaysia. Kamal Mohamad, 44, from Perak, emerged victorious after catching a 'talang' fish weighing 1.085 kilograms. His impressive catch earned him the top prize of RM7,000.

The victory is a sweet memory.

The competition, which took place yesterday, drew around 300 anglers from multiple Malaysian states, including Perak, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, and Selangor. Mohamad's winning fish was caught at 12:06 PM using live shrimp as bait. He expressed surprise and delight at his victory, celebrating with family and friends who were present to support him.

Throughout the event, participants successfully landed nearly 300 fish, representing a variety of species such as 'duri', 'gelama', 'malong', and 'yu'. The second place was secured by Zulkeflee Abd Aziz, 48, from Selangor, who caught a 600-gram 'duri' fish and won RM1,000. Ramat, 45, also from Selangor, took third place with a 540-gram 'gelama' fish, winning RM500.

The response shows that Tanjung Harapan is increasingly gaining a place among the fishing community and has the potential to be strengthened as a fishing and tourism hub in Selangor.

Despite rainy conditions, the anglers remained enthusiastic. Datuk Abd. Hamid Hussain, the Mayor of the Royal Klang City Council (MBDK), noted that the strong turnout for the second annual event indicates Tanjung Harapan's growing appeal as a destination for anglers. He believes the area has the potential to be developed further as a significant fishing and tourism hub within Selangor.

Hussain highlighted that Tanjung Harapan's proximity to Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam makes it an advantageous location for development as a tourist, fishing, and family recreation spot. He observed an increase in weekly visitors, drawn not only to fishing but also to the scenic coastal views, which include large cargo ships passing through Port Klang. The area also features a traditional Bugis boat-themed landmark, adding to its unique attractions. MBDK plans to focus on enhancing these aspects to ensure Tanjung Harapan remains a vibrant destination with continuous activities, especially on weekends.
