Malaysia confident of strong showing at Glasgow Games despite small contingent

Malaysia remains optimistic about achieving success at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, despite sending a smaller contingent of 59 athletes and 22 para-athletes. The reduced size is attributed to a decrease in the number of sports contested at the event, scheduled from July 23 to August 2.

Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz, the Malaysian contingent's Chef de Mission, expressed confidence in the athletes' preparation and commitment. "Our athletes are on the right track after thorough preparation and are believed to be capable of carrying the nation's challenge with full commitment to pursue encouraging results," he stated after visiting training facilities.

Awalan noted that the smaller contingent size, compared to previous editions, is due to organizers featuring only 10 sports and six para-sports. While this limits Malaysia's opportunities for gold medals, he believes the selected athletes can still make a positive impact. "Regarding targets, we will discuss them later, but what is most important is that I want all athletes to give their best performance because we have identified several sports that have the potential to contribute medals for the country," he said.

Malaysia will participate in athletics, para-athletics, swimming, para-swimming, track cycling, para-track cycling, weightlifting, para-powerlifting, lawn bowls, para-lawn bowls, 3x3 basketball and wheelchair 3x3, artistic gymnastics, netball, boxing, and judo. At the Birmingham 2022 edition, Malaysia secured seven gold, eight silver, and eight bronze medals.
