Malaysia Considers Expanding Aid Program to Cover Nutritious Foods

Malaysia is exploring the expansion of its Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) basic sustenance aid program to cover essential nutritious foods. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the National Action Council on Cost of Living (NACCOL) has agreed to propose including purchases of fruits, vegetables, and fresh protein sources under the SARA scheme.

This proposed expansion aims not only to enhance the purchasing power of citizens but also to actively promote access to healthier diets. Ahmad Zahid emphasized that this initiative is crucial for ensuring government assistance contributes to both economic relief and improved public health outcomes. The proposal will be presented to the main Council on Cost of Living, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, for further consideration.

In parallel, the government is actively addressing the cost pressures faced by businesses across the retail, logistics, and agri-food sectors. Ahmad Zahid highlighted the need to closely monitor geopolitical developments, particularly in the Middle East, alongside import compliance costs and the effects of subsidy rationalization on food production expenses. The objective is to prevent these factors from translating into burdensome price increases for consumers.
