Malaysia Encourages Southeast Asian Doctors to Strengthen Regional Robotic Surgery Collaboration

Malaysia is actively fostering collaboration among healthcare professionals across Southeast Asia, encouraging the adoption of high-precision robotic surgery technology. This initiative was underscored at the Surgical Symposium on Advanced Robotic Technology (SSMART 2026), an annual scientific event that convened over 25 doctors from Indonesia, alongside representatives from other neighboring nations.

The symposium serves as a regional platform for knowledge exchange, sharing clinical expertise, and expanding international partnerships. It aims to equip medical practitioners with insights into the efficiency of minimally invasive surgery, addressing the evolving complexities of future patient care. The event was inaugurated by YB Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, Penang State Executive Councillor for Local Government and Town & Country Planning.

Under the theme “Collaborative Intelligence: Humans & Robots Together,” the symposium highlighted the synergy between physician expertise and advanced technological tools. YB Jason H’ng Mooi Lye emphasized the necessity of strong cross-sector collaboration to build a world-class healthcare ecosystem. "Programs like SSMART demonstrate how these partnerships can bring expertise from various countries in the region to Penang, while also strengthening Penang's position as a leading healthcare destination," he stated.

The Indonesian delegation, comprising specialists in general surgery, urology, and orthopedics, contributed valuable perspectives on the challenges faced in domestic medical services. This two-way information exchange allows each country to tailor the adoption of robotic technology to their respective institutional readiness. Participants also gained hands-on understanding of high-precision devices such as the Da Vinci Xi and Mako SmartRobotics System, with the expectation that this knowledge will support the enhancement of medical teams' capacity and governance in their home countries.
