Malaysia on track to meet 70% podium target for 2027 SEA Games

Malaysia is setting an ambitious target of at least 70 percent of its athletes securing podium finishes at the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, which the nation will host. National Sports Council (MSN) Director-General Jefri Ngadirin stated that this goal is increasingly becoming a reality due to the encouraging progress shown by the national squads.

Ngadirin highlighted that the rise in world rankings and the success of Malaysian athletes in winning medals at regional, Asian, and world stages are strong indicators that the country's preparations are on the right track. "We have set a target of at least 70 percent of athletes on the podium for the 2027 SEA Games. Based on the presentations made, current developments are very positive, and we are on a good path to achieving this target," he said.

Preparations for both the able-bodied and para-athletes are proceeding as planned, with the National Sports Institute (ISN) set to provide comprehensive support services throughout the Games. To further consolidate efforts, MSN is planning to establish three sports villages in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Sarawak. This approach aims to house national athletes under one roof, facilitating holistic support in areas like sports science, medicine, and rehabilitation, similar to the concept used during the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.

Additionally, Malaysia has requested that its contingent be housed separately from other nations without significant cost increases. A Performance Assessment and Audit Panel has also been established, chaired by Datuk Marina, to ensure an independent and objective monitoring of athlete preparation programs. While the panel cannot remove athletes, it will evaluate the effectiveness of preparation programs implemented by sports associations, coaches, MSN, and ISN, providing recommendations for improvement. The decision on appeals for additional events in the 2027 SEA Games is expected from SEAGF President Tan Sri Norza Zakaria on July 16.
