Malaysia's Amir Daniel Ready to Train After Commonwealth Judo Gold

Malaysian judoka Amir Daniel Abdul Majeed has no plans to rest after his historic gold medal win at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He became the first Malaysian to win gold in judo for the under-81kg category.

Instead, the Penang-born athlete is eager to return to training for the upcoming Asian Games in Japan, with his ultimate goal being qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. "I am very, very happy and grateful for this success. So far, there are no major injuries. So, tomorrow (today) I can start training again."

His coach, Md. Nashriq Md. Nassir, stated that Amir Daniel's victory was not a surprise, citing the young athlete's high level of determination. "We expected Amir (Daniel) to win," the coach said. "I just told him before the final not to underestimate his opponent, even though we knew he could win." The coach also mentioned that Amir Daniel, a student at Universiti Sains Malaysia, will defend his gold medal at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Selangor.

Penang State Youth, Sports, and Health Committee Chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen praised Amir Daniel's achievement as extraordinary. He confirmed that Amir Daniel is eligible for an incentive award under the state's incentive scheme, with the exact amount to be announced later by the Chief Minister.
