Malaysia's Development Rate Expected to Hit 85% by 2040

Malaysia's development rate is expected to surge to 85% by 2040, marking a substantial leap from 77% in 2025 and a mere 28% in 1970. The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) is dedicated to fostering cities that are not only habitable but also highly desirable places to live. A key focus is ensuring access to quality, affordable housing for all families.

KPKT has exceeded targets set under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK-12), approving over 511,000 housing units nationwide through collaboration with state governments and private developers. To boost construction efficiency and minimize environmental impact, the ministry is accelerating the adoption of Industrialised Building Systems (IBS) and Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction (PPVC). Additionally, the "Simen Rahmah" initiative offers subsidized cement to help developers build affordable homes without compromising quality.

A livable city begins with the provision of quality housing at affordable prices so that every family has access to comfortable housing.

Nga Kor Ming, Minister of Housing and Local Government, emphasized the need for comprehensive urban planning. This includes considering transportation networks, job opportunities, educational facilities, healthcare services, and public amenities. KPKT is actively promoting Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) in public housing projects to ensure residents have convenient access to public transport and essential services.

The ministry is also enhancing smart city initiatives by implementing intelligent traffic management systems, monitoring technologies, and digitizing municipal services. Furthermore, KPKT is collaborating with Chinese counterparts to learn from their smart city control center development, leveraging data-driven approaches to improve urban governance and public service delivery. The focus extends to providing accessible public spaces and green areas to cultivate healthier communities, with a goal of establishing 1,000 "Taman MADANI" (MADANI Parks) within ten years, having already built or upgraded 216 in the past two years.

KPKT is also collaborating with its counterparts in China to learn about the development of smart city control centers that leverage data-driven approaches to strengthen urban governance and improve the efficiency of public service delivery.
