Malaysia's MCMC investigates data leak claims involving influencer Khairul Aming

Malaysia's Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is launching an investigation into allegations of personal data leaks affecting prominent influencer Khairul Aming. Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil confirmed he has directed MCMC to obtain a full report regarding claims that an unauthorized individual accessed personal information and systems belonging to a telecommunications company.

Fahmi stated he met with representatives from the telecommunications company, who informed him they were contacting Khairul Aming for more details about the incident. "The matter is quite concerning because the complaint I read on Threads from Khairul Aming suggests an individual who should not have access to personal information," Fahmi said at a press conference. "Secondly, this individual also had access to the inventory or systems owned by a telecommunications company."

Local media previously reported that Khairul Aming expressed displeasure after alleging that his private phone bill information was publicly disclosed by an unknown person. Through a post on the Threads app, he sought an explanation from a telecommunications company about how his phone account details were leaked.

Fahmi urged any individual who has experienced similar incidents to report to MCMC through its complaint portal. "If any party sees an incident similar to this, please report it to MCMC so we have records, information, and evidence for follow-up action," he said. He added that intentionally disseminating Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is an offense under the Personal Data Protection Act.
