Malaysia water village fire destroys 1000 homes, displaces over 9,000

A devastating fire has swept through a water village in Sandakan, Sabah, leaving a trail of destruction and rendering thousands homeless. The Star reported that approximately 1000 homes, many of them elevated wooden structures, were reduced to ashes, impacting a staggering 9,070 residents. The scale of this disaster is immense, with the fire engulfing an estimated 10 acres of the densely packed village.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel faced significant challenges in their efforts to combat the blaze. The narrow walkways of the village made it difficult for fire trucks to reach the scene, and the receding tide complicated the firefighters' ability to draw water from the open sea. These environmental factors, coupled with strong winds, unfortunately fueled the rapid spread of the fire.
