Malaysian party offers free legal aid against defamation suit over Tabung Haji issues

The youth wing of Malaysia's Amanah Party has stepped in to offer free legal assistance to those targeted by defamation lawsuits from Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, the chairman of Mara. Dusuki initiated a RM5 million defamation suit against social media users who allegedly tarnished his reputation in connection with issues surrounding Tabung Haji, a public pilgrimage fund.

The action of sending demand letters to individuals raising questions about the Tabung Haji issue is seen as too drastic and excessive.

Amanah's youth leaders, Fadhli Umar Aminolhuda and Azri Abdullah, deemed Dusuki's actions "drastic and excessive." They argued that as a former deputy minister and experienced politician, Dusuki should understand the public's interest in the Tabung Haji matters, particularly among Muslims in Malaysia. They suggested his eagerness to send legal demand letters indicates a fear of public scrutiny.

Datuk Dr. Asyraf's actions of sending demand letters seem to show he is too afraid of any comments and concerns voiced by ordinary citizens.

The party emphasized that public criticism or questions should be met with clear, thorough, and reasoned responses, not legal intimidation. They also questioned Dusuki's decision to include a photo of an individual in his legal action, even when that person had not directly named him. Amanah views this as an overreach, especially when the individual's name was shared by others.

This pro bono legal service aims to support ordinary citizens who have received these demand letters. Amanah noted that many recipients are not political elites and may struggle to defend themselves in court. The party's intervention offers a crucial lifeline to those facing potential legal battles over their concerns about the Tabung Haji fund.
