Malaysian Weightlifter Syahmi Wins Gold, Sets New Commonwealth Games Record

Mohamad Syahmi Nor Ghazali has secured Malaysia's sixth gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, dominating the 94kg weightlifting event. The 22-year-old athlete not only claimed the top spot but also shattered the existing Games record with a combined lift of 347kg.

Syahmi's performance was a display of strength and precision. He began the snatch portion of the competition with a successful lift of 150kg on his second attempt. He then moved to the clean and jerk, where he lifted 197kg, significantly outperforming his closest rivals and setting a new benchmark for the Games.

The silver medal went to Canada's Alex Bellemarre, who managed a total lift of 346kg, just 1kg shy of Syahmi's record. Australia's Oliver Riley Saxton earned the bronze medal with a total lift of 336kg. Bellemarre's challenge faltered as he failed to lift 192kg in his final two attempts during the clean and jerk segment, solidifying Syahmi's victory.
