Mallorca Airport braces for delays as ground staff announce strikes

Mallorca's Son Sant Joan Airport faces potential disruptions as ground handling staff plan partial strikes. The "Comisiones Obreras" union announced work stoppages for July 28, and August 1, 4, and 8, primarily affecting ground handling services. The union aims to secure better working conditions, including improved occupational safety, organization, pay, and overall employment terms.

Negotiations between the union and Swissport management, which handles services for airlines like Condor, Tui, and Marabu, concluded without an agreement. Despite the impasse, the CCOO stated they remain open to further discussions. The strikes are scheduled to occur during specific hours: 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM on the designated days.

Travelers should anticipate longer queues and delays, particularly during the strike periods. However, significant flight cancellations are not expected. Spanish law requires "minimum services" during strikes, meaning only a portion of the workforce can participate, thus limiting the impact on flight operations. The union's demands include enhanced measures against high temperatures, adequate staffing levels, better work organization, and full adherence to the collective bargaining agreement for ground handling personnel.
