Mamdani-backed candidates Lander, Valdez win NY primaries

Claire Valdez has secured the Democratic primary win in New York's 7th Congressional District, according to CBS News projections. Valdez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, was endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, though outgoing Rep. Nydia Velazquez had backed Antonio Reynoso.

In a significant victory for progressive Democrats, Brad Lander defeated two-term incumbent Dan Goldman for the Democratic nomination in New York's 10th congressional district. Lander, the former city comptroller and Working Families Party nominee for the 2026 general election, received heavyweight endorsements from Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Polls closed Tuesday night for New York's Primary Day, with several other incumbents projected as winners. Rep. Thomas Suozzi won in NY-03, Rep. Grace Meng in NY-06, Rep. Yvette Clarke in NY-09, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in NY-14, and Rep. Ritchie Torres in NY-15. Thomas DiNapoli was projected by the Associated Press as the winner in the Democratic primary for New York City comptroller.
