Mammoth Tusks and Bones Unearthed as Danube River Recedes in Bulgaria

An unexpected consequence of the prolonged drought in Bulgaria has emerged from the depths of the Danube River: the discovery of remarkably well-preserved mammoth bones. As the river's water levels plummeted, the dry riverbed near the village of Ryahovo in the Ruse region revealed a significant paleontological find.

The fossils, including a lower jaw, two tusks, and a rib, were stumbled upon by a local resident. Experts from the Ruse Historical Museum have since confirmed the findings and transferred them to the museum. There, they will undergo a drying and conservation process before detailed analyses can determine their precise age and origin.

Scientists are optimistic that this discovery is just the beginning. They suggest that the receding waters of the Danube could uncover further prehistoric remains buried within the river's sediment. "The low water level of the Danube may lead to new significant discoveries," stated the director of the local museum, highlighting the potential for more finds in the area.

The Ruse region itself has a history of paleontological significance, with previous discoveries of prehistoric animal remains. The local museum already houses fossils from the Ice Age and a life-size mammoth replica. This latest find occurs amid a severe drought affecting much of Southeastern Europe, causing the Danube to reach some of its lowest levels in years, uncovering treasures hidden for millennia beneath its waters.
